The nature of Public Communication – a speech communication situation where a speaker delivers a message before the audience/listeners.

Steps in Speech Preparation:

1. Choose a topic – What to speak about may be your problem when you are asked to deliver a speech/presentation. The following guides may help you in choosing a topic:

     Make an audience analysis.
You should consider what your audience want to get from you. Make sure that your audience will not waste their time listening to your presentation.

1. What benefits will your audience get from your speech?
2. What is the composition of your audience in relation to gender, educational preparation, age,
religious affiliation, political orientation and socio-economic status.
3. Will your audience find you credible as a speaker?
4. Will your audience understand the message you want to deliver?
5. What are the interests, hobbies, and aspirations of your audience?

The 9 P’s in presenting: Prior Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance of the Person Putting on the Presentation.
2. Evaluate your preparation as a speaker – After having determined your audience, consider your knowledge and your interest. You will not find it difficult to develop a presentation about a subject in which you have sufficient ideas to support it. Your interest in your subject will make you more enthusiastic to prepare a speech for it. Moreover, the purpose you want to achieve in your presentation will challenge you to do some research to know more about the subject.

3. Analyze the Occasion – You have to know the purpose of the occasion. You also have to consider the nature of the specific occasion. These will help you decide on the topic that you will talk about.

The following questions may be of help to you when analyzing the nature of the occasion:
a. What is the theme of the gathering?
b. What is the purpose of the gathering?
c. What is the venue of the occasion?
d. What is the time limit of your speech?
e. Is the venue provided with acoustics and audio-visual equipment?
f. Is it properly ventilated?
g. Are there other speakers in the occasion?
h. Will an open forum follow after your speech?

4. Brainstorm – If the previous guides will not help you, define your subject. Brainstorming may help you. While you brainstorm, write down the relevant concepts and ideas that will get into  your mind.

5. Conduct a survey of literature and other available materials
You may have defined the topic already, but you do not have enough ideas to support the subject. Then, conduct a survey on the relevant literature and other supporting materials. You should consider the opportunity to do some research as you organize your speech.

6. Limit your topic – After you have identified the general topic, narrow it down to a subject which you can comprehensively discuss within he time-frame given to you. Know exactly what you will talk about.

7. Identify the purpose of your speech – After having defined the scope of your speech, consider the general and specific purposes of your speech. Determine what exactly is the purpose of your speech. Consider what do you want to achieve in your speech.

    Speech to inform
This speech aims to impart knowledge to make things clear or to secure understanding. The speaker conveys information objectively through definition, explanation, narration and other methods.

Prepare and outline of your speech.

You should make a detailed outline of the important points in your message before you start writing your speech.
Your speech must have the following parts: Introduction, body and conclusion. You can choose the topic outline (consists of words or phrases) or a sentence outline (consists of sentences). Observe the logic and parallelism in the arrangement of your ideas.

Below is a guide which may help you in preparing your presentation outline:

I. Introduction
    A. Interesting opening
    B. Preview of the speech
II. Body
    A. Major ideas
    B. Supporting ideas
III. Conclusion
    A. Summary of the Major ideas
    B. Significant closing

 Organize your speech
Write your speech after you have determined the scope and purpose of your speech. In the organization of your ideas, observe the principles of unity, coherence and emphasis. Present your speech in an appropriate and clear language. Make your explanations precise and vivid.
